People outside Arizona assume our outdoor movie season is short. It's the opposite — we have one of the longest in the country. What we have instead of a season is a schedule, and the difference between a great night and a miserable one usually comes down to picking the right month and the right start time.
After more than 1,500 events across Southern Arizona, here's the honest month-by-month rundown.
The Short Version

If you only remember one thing: October and March are the two best months of the year for an outdoor movie in Tucson. Everything else is a tradeoff you can manage.
The Two Things That Actually Matter
Sunset time sets your earliest possible start. A projector can't beat daylight, so the movie begins about 15–20 minutes after official sunset. Arizona doesn't observe Daylight Saving Time, which means our summer start times stay reasonable while the rest of the country pushes to 9 PM.
Evening temperature — not the daily high — determines comfort. Tucson sheds heat fast after dark thanks to low humidity. A 102° afternoon in June can be a very pleasant 84° by 8:30 PM. That drop is why summer events work here at all.
Month by Month
January — Excellent
Sunset around 5:35 PM, so the movie starts before 6 and kids are home by 8. Evenings run 45–55°F. Bring blankets, or add patio heaters and lean into the cozy factor. Our most requested month for neighborhood holiday-carryover screenings.
February — Excellent
Arguably the most comfortable month of the year. Sunset near 6:05 PM, evening temps in the mid-50s to low 60s, and essentially no rain. Valentine's weekend books out early.
March — Peak
Perfect. Sunset around 6:25 PM, evenings in the 60s, zero humidity, spring training crowds in town. March weekends are the first to sell out on our calendar every year.
April — Peak
Still ideal, warming into the 70s at night. Sunset near 6:45 PM. School events, graduation parties, and end-of-year HOA gatherings dominate the schedule.
May — Very Good
Days climb into the 90s, but the evenings settle in the mid-70s and feel wonderful. Sunset around 7:10 PM pushes the movie to about 7:30. The last comfortable month before real heat arrives.
June — Good, With Planning
The hottest and driest month, and home to the year's latest sunset (~7:28 PM), so plan on a 7:45–8:00 PM start. Evening temps sit in the mid-80s. Pair it with a snow cone machine and shaded pre-show seating and it works fine — June poolside movie nights are a Tucson staple.
July — Monsoon Season
The monsoon typically arrives mid-June to early July and runs through September. Storms are dramatic, localized, and usually done by mid-evening. We track the forecast closely and can push a start time, relocate, or reschedule. Humidity is at its annual peak, which makes the heat feel heavier than June's.
August — Monsoon Season
Same as July, with slightly earlier sunsets (~6:55 PM) that make an 7:15 PM start possible. Back-to-school events fill this month. Have a rain plan and a backup date on the calendar and you'll be fine.
September — Very Good
The monsoon tapers, humidity drops, and sunset slides back to about 6:15 PM. Evenings in the upper 70s. September is genuinely underrated — the season is turning and the calendar hasn't filled yet.
October — Peak
The single best month of the year, and it isn't close. Evenings in the 60s to low 70s, sunset around 5:45 PM, no rain, and Halloween programming that practically sells itself. Book October in July.
November — Peak
Sunset near 5:25 PM means a 5:45 movie start — a huge advantage for family and school events. Evenings in the mid-50s. Thanksgiving-week neighborhood screenings are one of our favorite traditions.
December — Excellent
Earliest sunset of the year (~5:22 PM). Cool at 45–55°F, so plan for heaters and blankets, but a holiday movie on a big screen under a clear desert sky is hard to beat. December books faster than most people expect.
Monsoon Season, Handled
Roughly June 15 through September 30 is officially monsoon season. Here's what actually happens: storms build over the mountains in the afternoon, roll through between 4 and 8 PM, and clear. They're intense and often very local — it can pour in Oro Valley while midtown stays dry.
What we do about it:
- Watch the radar and the hourly forecast starting 48 hours out
- Shift the start time later when a cell is moving through early
- Break down inflatable screens quickly if wind picks up (safety first — inflatables are the first thing to come down)
- Work with you on a backup date rather than forcing a bad night
Our cancellation policy is built around Arizona weather, not against it. Genuine weather cancellations aren't something we punish customers for.
Booking Windows That Actually Work
Demand in Southern Arizona is seasonal, and the calendar reflects it:
- October, November, March, April — book 8–12 weeks ahead. These fill first.
- December, January, February — book 6–8 weeks ahead. Holiday weekends go early.
- May, September — 4–6 weeks is usually plenty.
- June, July, August — often available inside 2–3 weeks. If you're flexible on the date, summer is the best value on the calendar.
One more lever worth knowing: we take 10% off Monday through Thursday events year-round. A Thursday night screening in a peak month costs less than a Saturday in the slow season.
